Obituary of Douglas John Wentzell

Douglas John Wentzell Age 94, of Newburne, Lunenburg County. Our much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Maplewood on June 24, 1921 he was a son of the late Amos and Ida (Beck) Wentzell formerly of Maplewood. He served in the Second World War with the 2nd Corps of Signals, enlisting December 1941 at Kentville. He served in England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In July 1945, he was posted to the Canadian Headquarters in London where he worked in the Signal Office until March 1946 and he then returned to Canada. Douglas worked as a warden for the Department of Fisheries, in forestry with Bowater Mersey and then as a construction worker and carpenter for many years. He had a passion for craftsmanship and built many pieces of fine furniture. He was a dedicated member of Transfiguration Anglican Church, Newburne in the Parish of New Germany, having served as a Parish Council Warden and a Warden of Transfiguration. Douglas was also actively involved in his community and was a supporter of the Newburne Community Hall for many years. His faith, his family and in his later years, his “million-dollar” cat meant everything to him. Douglas is survived by sons, Emery (Margaret) Wentzell, Eric (Jocelyn) Wentzell, all of Maplewood; Scott (Kathleen) Wentzell, Thunder Bay, Ont.; daughters, Linda (David) Foster, Maplewood; Sandra (Thomas) Martin, Dayspring; grandchildren, Anita Hepditch, Durham, NC; Kelly Wentzell (Rob), Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Amy Alia (Rami), Lunenburg; Pam McDormand (Devon), Northfield; Jeremy Foster (Aliesja), Cole Harbour; Erica Foster, Bridgewater; Misha Swinemar (Shane), New Germany; Marsha Tanner (Everett), Lower Sackville; Travis Martin (Roseanna), Nanaimo, BC; Rebecca Martin (Andrew), Kitchener; Emily and Kathryn Martin, Dayspring; Jordan Wentzell, Toronto; Joshua, Sarah Anne, Benjamin and Peter Wentzell, Thunder Bay; 15 great grandchildren; sister in law, Marjorie Wentzell, Walkerton, Ont; Douglas was predeceased by his beloved wife, Iona Lucille (Mader) and his siblings, Gilbert, Sadie Salsman, Carrie Maugher, Fred, Alice Salsman and Rev. Clyde Wentzell. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, May 17 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 route 10, New Germany. Funeral service 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 18 in Transfiguration Anglican Church, Newburne with Bishop Stephen Kristenson and Rev. Catherine Robar officiating. Interment will follow in St. Matthew’s Cemetery, Newburne. Family flowers only please, donations may be made to Transfiguration Anglican Church or charity of choice.
