Obituary of David Atkinson

David Michael Atkinson 19, of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2003. Born in Bridgewater, he was the younger son of Anthony and Susan (Murdock) Atkinson and brother of Mark. Dave graduated from Bridgewater High School in 2000, receiving the Rowland C. Frazee Scholarship (RBC) and two additional scholarships from Dalhousie University where he excelled and enjoyed completing his first year in Commerce. Dave took part in many sports from a young age. He skied, curled, played tennis, golf and basketball but baseball was his sport. The only people who feared “Diggity” were those stepping up to the plate. A highlight for Dave was, after winning Provincials in 1998, he Co-Captained his team on to the Atlantics. As well as playing, he passed on his laughter and knowledge through coaching for the Bridgewater Baseball Association. In 2002, he received the Courage in the Face of Adversity Award from Baseball Nova Scotia which summed up David’s attitude toward life. Although he loved sports, family and friends were always number one with Dave. He is survived by mother Susan, father Anthony, brother Mark, grandparents Helen and Dave Murdock, aunts Katherine, Elaine and Carolyn, uncles Brian, Ward and Michael, and many cousins. He was pre-deceased by grandparents Harry and Dorothy Atkinson. Funeral services will be held at Bridgewater United Church on Thursday, July 10th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at the Bridgewater Toronto Dominion Bank for a BHS scholarship in Dave’s honour, to the Children’s Wish Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. Burial at Fort Point Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
