Obituary of Mary Barnett

Mary Ann Barnett 84, of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, daughter of the late James and Mary Ann (Houselander) Griffin of London, England passed away on May 4, 2003 at the South Shore Regional Hospital. She is survived by her son, John, London, Ontario, daughter-in-law, Marlene, Oxford, NS, and two grandchildren, Scott (Karen), Halifax, NS and Sierra, Truro, NS. She was predeceased by her husband, Joel, and two brothers, James and Edward. Mary, who was well-loved by all who knew her, had a long and very happy marriage. Born in London, England, she grew up in the borough of Deptford. Upon leaving school, she worked for the United Dairy chain of food shops before becoming a shop manager with the David Gregg chain. She managed a number of different David Gregg shops from the London Blitz throughout Word War 11 and after and she was known for her efficiency. She married Joel, her sweetheart, in 1946. Following the miscarriage of a baby daughter, she gave birth to her only child, John, in 1949. Mary and her family immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Granby, Quebec. There she worked for the Esmond Mills blanket company until 1968 when Joel’s company moved them to Hawkesbury, Ontario. Upon retirement, Mary and Joel moved to Bridgewater, NS, close to the sea and their family. Mary volunteered in the gift shop of the South Shore Regional Hospital for many years and was a loyal supporter of the hospital and many other charities. Wherever Mary went, she added to her list of friends, and corresponded with those she knew before, never leaving any behind. They all meant so much to her. She will be sadly missed by her many wonderful friends in many different places. The family would like to thank Drs. Abriel and Barss and the nurses and staff of the South Shore Regional Hospital, palliative care nurse, Irene Hirtle, and NS Home Care, all of whom went beyond the call of duty on many occasions. Your kindness will not be forgotten. A memorial service will be held 11am Friday in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, Archdeacon John Clarke officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made of Mary may be made to the N. S. Lung Association, The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation or to Shaid Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be made at www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
