Obituary of Howard Gass

Reverend Howard Douglas Gass, B.Th. 88 died peacefully at his home, 23 Regent St. Bridgewater, N.S. on Friday Oct. 17, 2003. Born April 7 1915, in Londonderry, N.S. he was the youngest child of Frederick R. Gass and Georgia (Simpson) Gass. His Life is celebrated by his wife of 59 years, Verna (Webber) Gass, his children, David (Lori Keelty), Lower Rose Bay, Deborah (William Zimmerman), St Margaret’s Bay, Margaret (Robert Mahoney) London, England & Rebekah (Christopher Doering), Denver, Colorado; grandchildren Metrova, Jonathan, Genevieve, Amy, Daniel, Thomas, Susannah, Alexander, Rebekah, Cecilia and Elias. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Simpson and Donald, Sisters Marge, Helen, Katherine and Jean. After attending Mount Allison University he graduated from Pine Hill Divinity Hall in 1943 and served the pastoral charges of the United Church of Canada in Burlington, Saltsprings, Parrsboro, Bible Hill, Stellarton, Nova Scotia and Park Royal, Charlottetown, where he retired in 1981. He continued his ministry as interim minister at Hunter River Pastoral charge, hospital chaplain, chaplain of University of P.E.I. and minister of Visitation at Spring Park. In May 2003 he celebrated 60 years of ordained ministry. Gifts to Beads of Hope Campaign, Bridgewater United Church, UNICEF Nova Scotia, or UNICEF P.E.I. may be made in Douglas memory rather than flowers. A celebration of his life will be held at Bridgewater United Church on Thursday October 23, 2003 @ 2 P.M. A reception for family and friends will follow the service.
