Obituary of Jack Mitton

Jack Winward Mitton 85, Bridgewater, N.S., passed away on January 2, 2003 in the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Great Lever, Lancs, England, he was the son of the late Jonathan and Alice Mitton, England. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty of 53 years and two daughters, Sandra Monette, Richmond, B.C. and Cheryl Vienneau (Walt), Windsor Junction, N.S., five grandchildren, one great grandson as well as brother Brian (Margaret), sister Brenda and many nieces and nephews in England. Son Paul predeceased him. He sailed with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. of London, England as a Merchant Marine Engineer Officer through the Second World War, followed by 7 years at the P & O Dock Staff Office, North Woolwich, London; emigrated to Canada in 1953 where in Nova Scotia he sailed with Western Union Cable Repair ships for 3 years from Halifax and with Canadian Hydrographic Service Survey Ships for 5 years from Dartmouth and Pictou; served as Command Boiler Inspector in H.MC. Dockyard in Halifax for 3 years; with the C.N. Ferry Service for 2 years in Yarmouth; appointed Marine Instructor, then Head Instructor at the N.S. Nautical Institute, Halifax and held that position for 17 years before retiring to Bridgewater in 1984. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24, Bridgewater; a former member of the British Institute of Marine Engineers and a Chartered Engineer in the Council of Engineering Institutions; held a First Class Certificate of Competency for Steam and Motor Driven Ships; a holder of the 1939 – 45 Campaign Star, The Atlantic Star, The Italy Star, The Burma Star, The Africa Star and Victory Medal. Jack was an avid model railroader, accomplished woodworker and spent many hours in his workshop. His loving family will sadly miss him. Special thanks to Dr. J. Livingstone, the Surgery Floor staff of the South Shore Regional Hospital and the Alternate Care Floor staff of the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater where a legion memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday and where memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Monday, January 6, 2003, Rev. Ivan Norton officiating. Interment of ashes will take place at sea, at a later date. A reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion, Churchill Street, Bridgewater.
