Obituary of Arthur Penny

Arthur James Penny 88, of Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany, formerly of Bridgewater, passed away June 22, 2003 in the Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Auburndale, he was the son of the late James and Cora (Bailey) Penny. He went overseas on December 22, 1939 with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. In England, he played with the West Nova Scotia Band and orchestra. The orchestra played for a command performance for the Duchess of Kent at the Overseas Legion Club in London. He returned to D. Company, 18 Platoon, W.N.S.R. just prior to sailing to the Mediterranean. He took part in the invasion of Sicily and Italy. Returned to England in June, 1944 and returned to Canada in October 1944. Instructed in Yarmouth prior to discharge on May 11, 1945. He was employed with LaHave Auto Service (later Simmons Motors) as Parts Manager, retiring in 1979. He played with various orchestras for about 20 years as a trumpet player. He was a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir for 62 years, also a member of the Men’s Choir and male quartet retiring in 1994; also a member of the S.S. Concert Orchestra and the South Shore Chorale. He is survived by sisters, Thelma Hebb, Bridgewater; Dorothy Jefferson, Fredericton; Barbara MacAuley, Halifax. He was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn (Saunders); son, Jimmie; second wife, Rita (Ramey, Wagner). In keeping with Arthur’s wishes, his body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Science. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9pm with a public legion tribute service being held at 7pm, all in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. A memorial service will be held 11am Wednesday in St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, Rev. James Slack Jr. officiating. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St Paul’s Lutheran church, Rosedale home for Special Care of the charity of your choice.
