Obituary of Ethel Stevens

Ethel Diane Stevens 60, Western Shore, passed away February 1, 2003 in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in East Chester, N.S., on May 9, 1942, she was the adopted daughter of the late Charles “Clifford” Sawler and Lillian Didcock. After her children were school age, she began working at the Oak Island Inn and then at Highliner Foods in Lunenburg until her illness last year. She enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitch, knitting, flea markets, Frenchy shopping and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She had a fascination with angels and art, especially the works of the late Maud Lewis. She loved gardening and the solitude she found in her backyard. All animals held a special place in her heart. She was loving mother to Charles (Janet), Maitland, and Dianne (David) Percival, Bible Hill, and Nanny to her precious granddaughter, Courtney and her grandson Kevin Stevens, who was her special little boy. She is also survived by her biological mother Greche “Greta” Murray, Nappan, her half brother Ian (Betty Anne) Murray, Orleans, Ontario, her half sister Linda (Nick) O’Toole, Erinville, Ontario, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred, on January 29, 2003. Visitation will be held Friday from 7 to 9pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater and from where memorial service will be held 2pm Saturday, Rev. Tom Kerr officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Lodge That Gives or the Shaid Animal Shelter.
