Obituary of Calvin Leroy Garber

of Calvin Leroy Garber 86, Middlewood, Lunenburg Co., passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 26, 2008 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Born in Newcombville, he was the son of the late Wilbert and Gladys (Himmelman) Garber. Calvin was a member of the Canadian Army Provost Corp stationed in London at the end of the Second World War in 1945. He returned home to become a carpenter and then truck driver for LaHave Creamery in Bridgewater. He served as Warden of the Lunenburg County Jail in Centre for a number of years before becoming the Administrator of the Lunenburg Municipal Hospital in Dayspring where he served for many years until his retirement. He believed strongly that every person should be treated with dignity and should be treated with respect and showed this by personal example. Calvin was an avid animal lover. He was a Director of the South Shore Exhibition in Bridgewater for many years, a Director of the Maritime Quarter Horse Association and a member of both Lunenburg County Western Riders and South Shore Reiners Association. He was the first secretary of the Maritime Ox Pulling Association and was instrumental in bringing the International Ox Pull to the South Shore Exhibition. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert, (Newcombville). He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife, Lorna Llewellyn, Middlewood; sons, Mathew (Nikki), Indian Path; Elmer (Beverley), Dayspring; grandsons, Jeffrey (Allison), Bedford; Jason (Nancy), Bedford; step-granddaughter, Myla, Indian Path; many nieces and nephews. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service 11 a.m., Friday in Middlewood United Church, Middlewood. Rev. Vivian Moores officiating with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
