Obituary of Arnold Sarty

Arnold Whitman Sarty 81, of Bridgewater, went to be with the Lord on April 9, 2004. He was the son of the late Capt. Ruey V. and Mercy (Whitman) Sarty and native of Pleasantville, Lunenburg County. Upon completion of high school at Bridgewater, Mr. Sarty joined the staff at Royal Bank of Canada. After service of 2 years, he resigned from the bank to take up studies in accounting and business administration. Upon completion thereof, he was articled to the firm of Lee & Martin, Chartered Accounts at Halifax and Moncton. Mr. Sarty received his designation as a Chartered Accountant and was admitted to membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia in 1951. In 1953, he accepted the position of Chief Accountant with the Nova Scotia Power Commission and later was named Chief Financial Officer and Secretary of the Commission. He was appointed Auditor General of the Province of Nova Scotia in 1965. He held that position with distinction until retirement in 1983. Throughout his career, Mr. Sarty served on a number of boards and commissions. He had been active in committee work for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia; he served as a Chapter Director of the Society of Industrial and Cost Accountants of Nova Scotia; and he was an honorary Governor of the Institute of Internal Auditors. He was the longest serving member of the Teachers Pension Commission, having served for 30 years. Mr. Sarty had many interests and hobbies, including fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing, skating and gardening. He was a devoted family man – husband, father, grandfather. Upon retirement he and his wife moved from Halifax to Bridgewater. Above all, he was a devoted Christian from youth. His love for the Lord and his wisdom, knowledge and understanding of the scriptures enabled him to be a counsel and guide to others. Surviving are his wife, the former Gwen Tutty; son, Stephen Arnold (Ruby); daughter, Susan Irene (Mike) Mason; sister Dolly Crowell; and his grandchildren, Jacob, Andrew, Rebecca Sarty; Samara (John) Gosling; Ryan, Susannah and Zach Mason. Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be held Tuesday April 13, 2pm also at the Funeral Home. Family flowers only.
