Obituary of June Wentzell

June Louise Wentzell 84, Walnut St., Bridgewater, passed away at home on Sunday, December 12, 2004 after a brief illness. Born in Bridgewater, she was the daughter of the late Prescott and Louisa (Beaumont) Kaulbach. Before becoming a stay at home Mom, June was executive secretary at Hebb Motors. She returned to the work force later in life and was employed by Coughlan and Coughlan Law Firm for 14 years, as a bookkeeper/title searcher. June’s involvement in a variety of volunteer activities were both her passion and her hobby. First and foremost, she lived and breathed her political affiliation. She was the definition of a true blue progressive conservative. June was one of the founding members of the Lunenburg West P.C. Women’s Association. She chaired the inaugural meeting on February 28, 1978 and had been actively involved until her death. She held a number of executive and committee positions at the local, provincial and federal levels, including president, secretary and past president. June was one of the organizers of the Bridgewater, branch #24, Legion Auxiliary in 1947. Not only a charter member, she was a past president and life member as well as recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Legion’s highest honor. This was the first time the medal was given to an auxiliary member. June also served on various committees and executive positions, including auxiliary secretary for 28 years. Her favorite motto was “Pride in our Past – Faith in our Future”. June was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, joining the AYPA, as a youth. Over the years, she was actively involved with the Anglican Church Women serving in many executive positions and on various committees, including altar guild. As well as the local ACW, she was also involved regionally. June was a lay reader and a longtime member of the church choir. June was actively involved with the Lunenburg Campus – NSCC, as a member of the Board of Directors. June was actively involved with the Lunenburg South/Bridgewater Women’s Institute from 1991 until the present. She held a variety of executive positions, including secretary. She was also an executive member of the Women’s Institute District Board. June was a member of the Hillside Pines Auxiliary for several years. In addition to her volunteer involvement, she found time to become a league bowler, a singer in the hospital chorus, a weekly dart player, an occasional swimmer having taken her lessons in her sixties, and a daily walker with the family dog, Scamp. She took great pleasure in her garden and read voraciously. During her latter years, June became a member of the Seniors Library Café, previewing books with subsequent group discussions. June was an avid Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs fan; her greatest delight was berating the players on the screen. June’s greatest joy was her family and numerous friends. She spent as much time as possible with her children and grandchildren and was happiest when preparing meals and sharing conversations with all. She particularly enjoyed eating out and did not miss many restaurants across Nova Scotia. Shopping was a passion, buying not just for her but others as well. June enjoyed spending time with young people, deriving pleasure from her children’s friends as much as her own. A favorite quote was “It is magnificent to grow old, if one keeps young.” June was particularly proud of her beautiful black hair and to quote her “nope, I don’t’ color it.” June is survived by her daughters, Linda Barton (Gary Clark), Dartmouth; Diane Roper (Lawrence) Sutherland, Truro; son, Paul Wentzell, Bridgewater; sister, Marjorie Hindley, Bridgewater; brother, Douglas (Helen) Kaulbach, Kelowna, BC; three grandchildren, Sheena Barton, Alberta; Jennifer Roper, Truro; Jeffrey Roper, Dartmouth; niece, Kristal Kaulbach, Vancouver; nephew, Peter Kaulbach, Toronto; also a number of cousins residing in England. June was predeceased by a son, David Alan in 1975 and her husband, Chester Brenton in 1994. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater. Rev. Ron Appleton officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. A private family burial service will be held at Brookside Cemetery. No visitation at the funeral home by request. Family flowers only, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
