Obituary of Luella Chase

Luella Beatrice (Wentzel) Chase 82, Of Barss Corner, Lunenburg County died suddenly at home on September 30, 2005. Born January 20, 1923 in Maplewood, NS, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Hannah (Banks) Wentzel. She was a member of the Barss Corner Baptist Church, where she was a long-time member of the church choir which she had to reluctantly resign from due to throat problems resulting from Wegener’s disease. She was also a Life Member of the Barss Corner Baptist Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed the fellowship, fund-raising, and social activities associated with this. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102 Ladies Auxiliary New Germany. She joined the Rebecca Lodge in Parkdale Maplewood in 1947 serving in many offices both locally and regionally. Over the years, she canvassed in her community for many charitable organizations - Canadian Red Cross, Arthritis Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, to name a few. She gathered many sponsors for the Rock-a-thons she participated in. Luella enjoyed reading and researching, gathering knowledge from medical books and literature. She corresponded with folks far and near, and in later years in the Wegener’s Support Group. Luella began her working years at a restaurant in Middleton, then Graves and other businesses in the valley. Later on she worked as a Census interviewer. Besides her dedication in raising of her family, she enjoyed such hobbies as quilting, embroidery, and hairpin lace, the latter of which she demonstrated at various Arts and Crafts Fairs and Festivals. She had a great love of music and enjoyed listening to music, singing, writing songs, playing the guitar and pump organ. Luella was an avid researcher into her genealogy which she continued to delve into right until the end. She always enjoyed playing cards and in later years became known as one of three ladies in her community called the Golden Girls who socialized together. Luella enjoyed going for drives and visiting her many friends and family. She is survived by her children, Ronald (Peggy) Barss Corner; Barbara Snyder (Richard) New Germany; Lorna Trethewey (Horton) Middle Sackville; and Alan (Janice) Barss Corner; grandchildren, Letitia Phillips (Kelly) Forest Hills; Shelley Kaizer (Farrell) Chester Basin; Jennifer Chase (Derek Zwicker) Italy Cross; Nena Snyder Toronto; Julie Snyder (Chris Haacke) Calgary; Angela Snyder (Galen Colp) Bridgewater; Jody Trethewey (Derek MacDonald) Lower Sackville; Joshua Trethewey (Middle Sackville; James Chase Barss Corner; Jaylene Chase Fredericton; Hilary Chase Truro; and Casey Chase Qualicum Beach, BC; great-grandchildren Breckon and Kayla Phillips Forest Hills; nephews Oliver Wentzell (Bertha) Halifax, Phillip Wentzell (Janice) Berwick, Bill Chase (Lorraine) Simms Settlement, and Steven Chase (Joanne) Tantallon. She was predeceased by her husband Paul, infant grandson Jason Trethewey, brothers Harold and Margeson Wentzell, nephew Wayne Wentzell, niece Ella Cronkite, and niece-in-law Ginger Wentzell. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in Sweeny’s Funeral Home 4895 route 10, New Germany, with a Legion Auxiliary Memorial Service at 6:45 p.m. Funeral service 1 p.m. Tuesday, in Barss Corner Baptist Church, Rev. Jennifer Joudrey officiating. Private family burial in Barss Corner Community Cemetery. Flowers from immediate family only, donations may be made to the Barss Corner Community Hall or to Barss Corner Community Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Barss Corner Community Hall.
