Obituary of Hazen Parent

Rev. Hazen Coles Parent Having served God faithfully, Hazen Coles Parent of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia died on August 19, 2005 and has now reached his heavenly home. Born September 10, 1926 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Hazen soon found his calling in life as he began to preach at the young age of 17. In 1945, he went to study at Gordon College in Boston where he met his wife to be, Hazel Mildred Anderson. On September 10, 1947 they were married. Graduating from Gordon, Hazen then attended Acadia Divinity College from which he obtained his Bachelor of Divinity. Hazen served in summer and student pastorates in Massachusetts, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia before accepting a call to Port Williams, NS. It was during his time there that Hazen and Hazel responded to a call to serve as missionaries in Bolivia. Hazen worked in Oruro, Bolivia as an area missionary. His next term of service was spent in La Paz where he worked as Program Director. This was followed by ministry at the Ferndale Baptist Church, Scarborough ON. During his third term of service overseas, Hazen worked as Director of the Southern Cross Radio Station. In 1971, Hazen and his family returned to Canada where he pastored a church in Montreal before accepting the call to serve as Senior Pastor of the Bethany Memorial Church, Aldershot NS. Following his time there, Hazen returned to Bolivia for a further year of service before returning to Canada where he served in the Mahone Bay Pastoral Charge. In 1982, Hazen accepted the call to become Area Minister for Western Nova Scotia for the United Baptist Convention of the Atlantic Provinces. Hazen loved good music and sang in various choirs. He was a well known philatelist and Baptist historian. Hazen also had a keen interest in photography. In his retirement he kept current on events in Canada and Bolivia through the Internet. Predeceased by his parents Coles and Gladys, brother Lloyd, two daughters, Linda Beth and Hazel Anita, daughter-in-law Cathy Parent and one grandchild, Ginger (Weagle). Survived by loving wife Hazel (Anderson) of Amherst, NS; sister Lois (Carlson) Rhode Island; children Gregory, Montreal, Mark (Margie) Pereaux, Carol (Jeff) Weagle, New Germany, grandchildren, Jeremy, Meaghan, Kaitlyn, Gregory, Brett and Amber, several nieces and nephews. Hazen was a patient, loving person whose life and Christian ministry bettered the lives of many people, both young and old, in Canada and Bolivia. A memorial service will be held 2pm Tuesday in the Bridgewater United Baptist Church, Rev Norman Hovland officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Hazen’s memory to Bridgewater Baptist Church for work in Bolivia.
