Obituary of Dexter Bruce
A. Dexter Bruce
Shortly after midnight, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 27, Dexter Bruce passed away after a long and arduous battle with prostate cancer. After being diagnosed in 1989, he fought it on and off for almost 17 years, surviving each reoccurrence, until it overcame him. Dexter was born in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, son of George and Maize Bruce, brother of Beth Cheney, St. John, NB; Dan Bruce, Mahone Bay. After graduating from Shelburne High School, as a cadet he enrolled in officer training just as the Korean War broke out. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1950 and served with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (RCHA) until February 1953. His decorations include the Korean Medal, the UNS medal and the Korea Volunteer Medal. He married Elisabeth (Betty) Lyons in 1956 and completed a B.Com. at Dalhousie University. He worked as a Market Analyst for Dupont Canada for 20 years in Montreal, and then moved to Mitchell, Ontario to open a Steadman’s department store that he and Betty ran successfully for the next 11 years. They retired to Bridgewater, where they enjoyed 15 years of happiness and joyful times. Dexter is survived by his wife of 50 years; Betty; two sons, James, Malta; John (Louise), Toronto and their daughter; Dexter’s one and only grandchild, Bridget Bruce.
