Obituary of Anna O’Neill

Dr. Anna O'Neill of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on February 7, 2006 at the age of 81 years. Born in Ebbs, Austria on December 2, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Georg and Katarina (Thaler) Biechl. She received her education in Austria, working as a school teacher and then as a physiotherapist. She later attended medical school at the University of Innsbruck. Upon graduation in 1958, she immigrated to Canada where she was involved in medical research as well as postgraduate studies in pathology and internal medicine. She practiced family medicine in Bridgewater from 1966 until 1994, retiring at ht age of 70. She was a staff member of the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater throughout her career and served on the Medical Society of Nova Scotia. She enjoyed classical music, gardening, the outdoors and playing the violin and piano. She was a long standing member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. Most of all she had a passion for living. She was an inspiration to all who knew her she touched the lives of many. She was a devoted wife and mother and beloved Oma to her granddaughters who adored her. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robert “Bob”; son, Scott, Summerside, PEI; daughter, Dr. Carmen O’Neill (Dr. Everett Weagle), Bridgewater; granddaughters, Kirsten & Rachael, Bridgewater. She was predeceased by her sister, Katarina; brothers, Georg, Jacob, Michael and 2 brothers in infancy. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm with prayers being offered at 8pm, all in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral Mass will be held 2pm Thursday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Bridgewater, Msgr. William Wamboldt officiating. Private family burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bridgewater. A reception will follow the service in St. Joseph’s Parish Center. Immediate family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Canadian Cancer Society or the South Shore Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Bridgewater.
