Obituary of Miriam Penney

Miriam Eleanor Penney 84, Pleasantville, Lunenburg County, passed away December 7, 2006 in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Mahone Bay, she was the elder daughter of the late Frederick and Dorothy (Sarty) Penney. Miriam excelled at athletics and her many achievements I softball, hockey, track and field, curling and golf earned her recognition as a member of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. After graduating from Bridgewater High School she was one of the first Canadian women bankers working in the Royal Bank, Bridgewater. Later she joined her father in Penney’s Insurance Agency, incorporating the business after his death and continued to operate it as President until her retirement. Miriam was a leader in many aspects of her community through her life: Girl Guide Leader, Womens’ President of the Bridgewater Curling Club and the Bridgewater Golf and Country Club, a founding member of the Osprey Ridge Golf Club and Warden of Holy Trinity Anglican Church being among her contributions. She is survived by her sister Margaret (Jack) Martin; nephews, John (Carole) Martin; Thomas (Sandra) Martin; grandnephews Travis and Spencer Martin and grandnieces Rebeca, Emily and Kathryn Martin. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. A memorial service will be held 11am Tuesday in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, Father Ron Appleton officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church or the charity of your choice.
