Obituary of Robert Finck
Robert Howard Finck
54, of Barss Corner, Lunenburg County, passed away January 13, 2007 at his home in Barss Corner. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William Isaac and Mildred (Welner) Finck. Robert grew up on East Ironbound Island leaving to travel around the world on the research vessel Vema. He returned to Nova Scotia to attend Nova Scotia College of Art and Design graduating with an education degree. Robert taught school in Newfoundland for three years and at New Germany Rural High School for 25 years. He initiated the Art program at NGRHS as well as being a provincial lead teacher on the Maritime Studies Course. He was one of the first teachers in the Nova Scotia to teach the geomatics program Arcview. He was a respected and loved member of the New Germany Rural High staff. Robert was a founding member of the South Shore Duelists Fencing Club, started the campus police at NGRHS and spent many years on the cafeteria committee at the school. He was also one of the original members of the Executive Committee of the New Germany and Area Medical Centre. Robert’s roots were on East Ironbound Island. As a teacher and an historian, he preserved his culture by living it. His traditional upbringing included fishing, hunting, growing potatoes, making sausage and sauerkraut, and carving tollers. Robert scripted the CBC Land and Sea program “EbbTide” in 1981, which documented the history of his home Island, and participated in the follow up program in 2005. Robert is survived his wife Donna, Barss Corner; daughter Katherine Finck, Portland Oregon; sons Jeremie (Shawn Wolf) Finck, Minneapolis Minnesota; Jason Finck, Barss Corner; sister Fay Anne (Robert) Isnor, Beaver Bank; brother Philip (Elizabeth) Finck, Boutilier’s Point; grandson Felix Finck; niece McKayla and nephews Matthew, Allan, Alex and Lawrence. Besides both his parents Robert was predeceased by his grandparents Willis and Ellen Finck of East Ironbound Island; Lucy and Roland Welner of Waverly. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater and from where the memorial service will be held 2:30pm Thursday, January 18, Rev. Nancy Price officiating. Private family internment. A public reception will be held at the New Germany Rural High School cafeteria at 3:30 pm Thursday January 18. Family flowers only, memorial donations in Robert’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, New Germany.
