Obituary of Denis Victor Mark Jarvis

JARVIS, Denis Victor Mark – Born in East Finchley, Middlesex County, England on May 11, 1924, he was the son of the late Standbridge Mark and Emily Maud (Dyer) Jarvis. Denis won a scholarship and was schooled at the Christ College, London. He joined the Royal Navy RNVR in 1941 at the age of 17 to serve in the Second World War. Receiving a commission to Sub-lieutenant in 1943, he joined the Midget Submarine (X-Craft) and subsequently was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions in the Far East. On October 16, 1944 he married Helen Findley Andrews of Port Glasgow, Scotland. He worked at the London Stock Exchange from 1946 to 1973 as a programmer where he was instrumental in the computerization of the stock exchange; he later became a senior systems analyst. In 1973, Denis and his wife decided to join their son, Michael and moved to Chester, Nova Scotia. His wife Helen passed away on January 14, 1986. Denis worked on the South Shore for ABCO Industries until his retirement. In October 1987, Denis re-married to Mildred “Tilly” Roberts of New Germany, where together they lived together until she passed in December 2015. He had volunteered on many local institutions, the South Shore Regional Hospital Board, New Germany and Area Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion branch 102, New Germany, just to mention a few. Denis was also a proud member of the New Germany and Area Men’s Choir. Denis felt his contribution to his community was his way “to thank” Canada for what he felt were the opportunities he had been given. Denis continued to live in New Germany until his death on Sunday, April 23, 2017 where he passed away in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater at the age of 92. Surviving are his son, Michael Terence Standbridge Jarvis and his wife, Gabrielle Christina (Grier); grandchildren, Mark Jarvis and Tracey Jarvis and great-grandson, Elliot Jarvis-Thiebaut; step son, Dwight Edgar Roberts, his daughter Danielle and his partner, Rachel; step-daughter, Janice Anita Joudrey, husband Walter; step-granddaughters, Meaghan Penny and Melissa Parsons; great-step grandsons, Carter Penny and Dezman Parsons. A Royal Canadian Legion tribute service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 27 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 route 10, New Germany followed by a time of remembrance, with Rev. Catherine Robar.
