Barbara Conrad

Obituary of Barbara Elizabeth Conrad

CONRAD, Barbara Elizabeth - 80 years old, of Middle LaHave, passed away at South Shore Regional Hospital on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 - she is sadly missed and happily remembered. Barbara was born in Maitland, the oldest of 7 daughters of the late Dawson St. Clair Joudrey and Pearle Sylvia (Barry) Joudrey of New Germany. She spent the first years of her life with her family at their farm in Maitland, attending school there. While living in Lunenburg and working at Kerr’s Restaurant, she met her future husband. After marrying Harry, she lived in Rose Bay, where they had their 4 children. As a young family they moved to a remote area of Labrador where she lived for 7 years, before returning to live again in Nova Scotia. She spent the rest of her life at the family home they had built in Middle LaHave. Besides being a wonderful and devoted mother and wife, Barbara was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Middle LaHave, and was involved with the Lutheran Church Women and teaching Sunday School and Girl Guides. She volunteered for various organizations. When her children were grown, she cared for the children of other families, enjoyed travelling with her husband, and looking after her grandchildren, who adored her. She didn’t get her driver’s license until she was in her 30’s and took full advantage of her newfound freedom, tearing around the countryside on her own, visiting family and friends. She loved her flowers and gardening, the beauty of nature, and telling us the names of wild flowers and plants. She is survived by her husband, Harry Williams Conrad, Middle LaHave, having just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary; son Gary (Wanda Publicover) Conrad, East LaHave; daughters, Cheryl (John) Hinckley, Lunenburg; Annette Rogers, Indian Path, Brenda (Rick Fancy) Conrad, Bridgewater; grandchildren, Sarah (Kory Oickle) Hinckley, Pine Grove; Ted Higney, Halifax; Tessa (Sam Bamford) Higney, Armstrong Lake, Hants County; Rebecca Rogers, Indian Path; Sam Rogers, Indian Path; great-grandson, Hayden Hinckley Oickle, Pine Grove.  Barbara is also survived by her 6 sisters, Jean (Richard) Baker, Baker Settlement, Lucille (Robert) Wentzell, Baker Settlement; Linda (Derrell) Veinotte; Carolyn (Paul Meisner) Joudrey; Susan (Stephen Briggs), Conquerall Bank; Cathy (Michael Rafuse) Joudrey, Parkdale; many nieces and nephews.
