Dear Christine and Matthew,
My sister Judy Laws (née Thorne) and I send our heartfelt condolences to you, to Dale’s brothers and sisters, to Dale’s parents Nita and Gordon, and to the many friends and colleagues who were graced by Dale’s courageous life.
Dale was our cousin, but having lived our lives outside Atlantic Canada meant that our paths seldom crossed. This was indeed our loss.
With deepest sympathy,
Steven Thorne & Judy Laws

I was so sorry to hear of Dale's passing. I have such fond memories of working with him, first at South Shore News and then at South Shore Herald. His outlook on life was infectious, but what I will remember the most is his great sense of humour and his kindness for all. He made this world a better place. My deepest sympathy to all his family, my heart goes out to you.

Dear Cathy and family,
I was so sad to hear that your brother Dale passed away. I know you and your family will miss his smile and all the good times that were shared. It is hard to find the words to comfort you except that he will always be in your heart, dreams and I am sure beside you every day. Remember all the good times you had with him and all those who loved him will do the same. This way he will never be too far away from us all.

Dear Christine, Matthew, Dean and family,
I first met Dale way back in the early '80s while working at CKBW. We were part of a small crew of 'green' reporters, eagerly covering South Shore school boards, council meetings and the like. What I remember most about Dale, beyond his quick wit and intelligence, was his terrific sense of humour -- something that was quite special, given the physical challenges he'd been dealt. And while we tended to giggle our way through many of those meetings we covered, when it came time for interviews, Dale was doggedly persistent -- always asking the tough questions of local politicians that I, for one, was far too timid to utter. In the years that followed the South Shore days, I was lucky enough to continue to enjoy Dale's humour at various Herald events and occasional get-togethers in Halifax. Beyond his wonderful sense of humour and his smarts, Dale was always a very kind and caring person whenever we met; someone who could make you feel that your shared conversation was the highlight of his day. Dale was, quite simply, one of the best. He will be so very missed; I consider myself fortunate to have known him. My deepest sympathies to all of you. June

Gordon, Nita and Madill families, We were deeply sorry to hear of your loss. We used to visit the Madill home many years ago and remember well, Dale and his brother Dean, as two smart and active little boys. Later, we recognized Dale's write-ups in the Chronicle Herald, and were very proud of his many successes. We send our condolences to you all, as we know Dale will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with you, Love, Connie and Buddy Rogers.

Christine and Matthew,
I was so saddened to learn of Dale's passing. Dale and I worked together at SNS where I had the pleasure of getting to know him. Loved his wit and his wisdom. Matt he spoke often of you, many times trying to set his red-headed son up with my red-headed daughter! He was much loved and respected by his colleagues. We will miss him. He adored you both, as you know. My sincere condolences. Regards, Cathy

What a wonderful guy to work with in the heyday of print media. A front page story everyday, was indeed his motto. If he wasn't above the fold when the legislature was sitting, it was like he felt he'd not done his job. Glad I got to know and work with Dale, a damn fine reporter if there ever was one.

Dean and Trudy, so sorry to hear of Dale's passing. He was a great guy, with a clear sight of what he believed in. From way back in the Young Liberal Days and through out his journalism career I always respected his courage and candor on matters of principle. In all the times I would cross paths with him I could count on a mischievous smile, and sincere interest in what I was up to.
Hang in there,
Leo

Christene, Matthew and Family:
I was truly saddened to learn of Dale's passing and regret that a long awaited medical appointment prevents me from giving my condolence in person. Dale and I really met when he joined Premier Hamm's staff at the same time I was appointed to Cabinet. We spent many happy and sometimes not so happy hours wrestling with the normal and not expected challenges of a new government. His experience often gave much needed objective advice about the various facets of our challenges and potential solutions. He was a true professional - loyal, openminded and creative. An added bonus for me was that we became friends. Later when he joined the department of Municipal Relations and Service Nova Scotia and I became Minister there I was able to him to turn to him for advice when I needed a opinion from outside my office. When I left government we would speak on the phone from time to time when there was a situation of mutual interest. His strength in dealing with his health issues was inspirational and it always seemed that he was much less concerned than those around him. I will miss him. My sincerest sympathy to all.

Dale was one of the most informed, astute, and attuned people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. His passion for politics and discussion were unsurpassed and always keen on the public interest and the well-being of community. Devotion to his wife and son were absolute and, as I have sons, I learned from him that journey and saw in Dale a man who devoted his best intentions to being there for his boy. Dale's wit and turn of phrase were second to none, always with a smile. He will be missed but thought of. Condolences to his family.

Christine and Matthew - there are no words and yet there are so many words - you know how I feel in my heart. Dale was a fixture in our home on Jubilee Road - we loved having him around. He knew my parents, my family, my children and of course Bill.
He offered lots of advice to Marianne and probably Shawn. Not sure if they listened but I am sure some of it sunk in.
Our friendship ran very deep. We all loved him.
Our sympathy to you.
We will never forget him and in saying this - we join dozens and dozens of others. He was a "one of a kind man".
