Karen, We are so sorry to hear about Don. We remember the great times we all had together at the Regimental Balls. Don always got us up for a dance, and we all had many a glass of wine and port together. They were good times. This is what we have to focus on now, the good memories. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

An edited version of the following was posted to the "RCN" Facebook Group Page on 29.04.18: Whether a fellow Physician, a Sister, an Administrator, a Med-A, a Tech, a Hospital Staff Employee or a Patient who found themselves either working or seeking medical assistance at CFH Hospital - herself a Unit aboard "HMCS Stadacona" - from 1971 to 1982 - Dr. Donald J. Scott CAPT. (N), first in his capacity as a Radiologist & later as the CO of the Unit, is certain to have in some positive way impacted your overall well-being as a health provider/consumer or as a sailor! Hospital staff benefited from Don's quite-persuasive mentoring on how to maximize patient care. Patients benefited from his extraordinary expertise as a Radiologist. All branches of the military benefited from Don's intricate knowledge of complex military organization & effective policy making. For those of us fortunate enough to have experienced sea-time as MO'S/Flight Surgeons (as Don did) in various RCN operational roles & who were subsequently posted ashore to CFH Halifax, Don was always a warm, willing & eager ship-mate. Celebrations of that special-bonding occurred at the HMCS Stadacona Officer's Mess or equally frequently at "RA Park". I met Don 45 years ago. We soon became mates & we remained so at the SSRH on the South Shore of Nova Scotia following our release from the RCN. Despite my oobvious shortcomings, I will be forever grateful to Don for selecting me as his "lead" for the annual Cornwallis medical bonspiel. My memories of the conversations between Don & his dear late friend Chuck Bruyere as we traversed N.S. from coast to coast will last my lifetime! It was there that I learned the true value of friendship. Karen, I am so sorry for the loss of the love of your life. My sincere condolences to his children & grand-children. Your duty, Sir, is done & done well. May you rest-in-peace. Forever Loved. Forever Remembered.

Dr Scott was such an honorable man. I consider myself so lucky to have worked for him. He taught me all the foundations of ultrasound. He always had his staff in his back pocket , concerned .just as much about our well being as he did about good diagnosis pictures. We're missed his larger than life personality when he retired and my heart aches for the amount I'm sure his family will miss him . My condolences to you.

Hello, we have never met but I immediately recognized Don's photo in the paper this morning. I served in HMCS Mackenzie in the spring of 1965 (a brand new Sub Lieutenant) when Don road with us to the Far East. Somewhere between Midway Island and the island of Guam the Second Canadian Escort Squadron received a Mayday to tend to an injured crewman of an American commercial ship. Since Don was riding in Mackenzie we left HMCSs Saskatchewan and Beacon Hill ( the latter, max speed 15 knots) heading to Guam and proceeded to rendezvous with the tanker. I was on watch on the bridge when Don was lowered into our whaler and taken over to the tanker. As officer of the watch I clearly remember speeding out to our station 2,000 yards on the tanker's port beam (showing off ---our captain's decision, not mine --- Don later said that it impressed the tanker crew) where we remained as both ships continued westward towards Guam and Don tended to the injured party. That evening Mackenzie held a Banyan on the quarterdeck (BBQ and some beer) and when asked by the tanker crew Don told them this was pretty standard fare nightly for the RCN at sea (not true of course; that was the one and only occasion I recall in two and a half years in Mackenzie).
The injured crewman was the ship's captain, who had been smoking in bed and received some bad burns. He did not want to call for help but the first officer decided that he needed attention (with which Don agreed) and no doubt was encouraged by the prospect of taking command should the captain be declared not fit for duty once seen by American health authorities in Guam. Indeed, that was the eventual outcome.
I made a career of the Navy retiring in 1995 in the rank of Rear Admiral (engineer). My wife and I moved from Ottawa to Mahone Bay (Mader's Cove) in 2010. I'm sorry that I didn't know Don was in the neighbourhood (although I now see that he is listed in the NS Naval Association's membership list!) It would have been lovely to renew acquaintances. I enjoyed our brief time together that spring. I'm sorry for your loss.
Kindest regards, Mike

He loved his family and was so proud of each of you. His grandchildren were such a blessing in his life.

It is with great sadness that I have heard of the passing of Don with whom I served for several years in the CFMS. Don was a strong supporter of the Defence Medical Association of which I was the Secretary for many years. We maintained contact since his retirement and got together in a different Canadian city for DMA's annual general meetings. He continued supporting Canada's military medical services through generous contribution in acquiring medical artefacts and through his membership in the RCMS Association. He will be remembered as a great officer a true professional and as a friend and comrade to us all. RIP My sypathies and those of all members of the old DMA guard and of the RCMS Association to Karen and to all members of the family. Militi Succurrimus !!.

I had the privilege to work with Don when he was Radiologist at SSRH as well as FMH in Lunenburg. He was a professional who took his work seriously. He was part of the team— always caring and considerate of staff. He took the time to put the patient at ease.
We kept in touch after we both retired and I looked forward to calling July 1 to wish him “Happy Birthday”. His 80th birthday gave us a chance to reunite with former friends and acquaintances thanks to Karen.
He will be missed.
Rest In Peace Don
