Obituary of Owen Hugh Calcott Thomas

Owen Hugh Calcott Thomas - passed away November 1^st, 2018.  Born November 24, 1984, in Bridgewater, he was the son of Kenneth Thomas and Rhian Calcott.

He is survived by his wife Kayla (Abbott) (Bridgewater), his brothers, Ethan Thomas (Bridgewater), Isaac Thomas (Fredericton NB), sister Bronwen Thomas (Halifax), parents-in-law Della and Dennie Williams (Shelburne), Chris Abbott (Bridgewater) and brother-in-law Cole Abbott (New Germany).  He was predeceased by his grandparents Lewis and Dorothy (Parker) Thomas, and John and June (Bryanton) Calcott. 

Owen was a dedicated and eager student and had a wide variety of interests.  He was the recipient of the Governor General’s Medal upon his graduation from high school, the University Medal in Economics (Bachelor of Arts degree) from Acadia University, and was awarded the Tax Prize when he completed his LLB from Dalhousie University.  He was employed with his father at the firm of Ferrier Kimball Thomas in Bridgewater where he specialized in the practice of corporate and tax law.  He enjoyed playing hockey, golf and baseball and was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Montreal Canadiens.  He played the bass in the school band and as he grew older he became an accomplished self-taught jazz drummer- Coltrane, Parker, Jones, Blakey and Monk were particular favourites and a great source of musical inspiration for him.  He was also a connoisseur of fine scotch whisky. Owen possessed a high degree of self- discipline and approached every task he undertook with thoughtful determination.  He tried to live his life as a reflection of his belief that a person should strive to be the most honest, ethical and principled individual possible. 

The family wishes to thank Dr. Heather Johnson, the palliative care team of Dr. Debra Gowan and nurse Noeleen Reilly, and the VON for all of their care and concern.  Memorial donations in Owen’s memory may be made to the ALS Society of NBNS.  Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater, where a family graveside service will be held at a later date
