Obituary of Donald James Robert Allen

ALLEN, Donald James Robert - Age 92,  passed away at the Veterans Unit, Soldiers'  Memorial Hospital, Middleton, NS on Tuesday, March 12, 2019.

Donald was born in Oxford, Nova Scotia.  He was the son of Charles and May (Ryan) Allen.  He was a WWII veteran serving firstly with the Merchant Marine and then with the Royal Canadian Navy. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #24, Bridgewater where he spent a fair amount of time playing in dart tournaments and was also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, where he served on many committees.    

Donald was an electrician by trade and worked in Hamilton, Ontario where he and his wife raised their family, Alfred, Ernie, Eddie, Brian, Marie, Brenda and Donald Jr.

Upon his move to Nova Scotia he purchased the Lighthouse Motel and after the passing of his wife he sold the motel but continued working as an electrician until he took employment with Hillside Pines as their Supervisor of Maintenance and Housekeeping.

By this time he had met a lady by the name of Shirley Oickle and the two were married for 36 years until Shirley's passing in 2018.  During this time he had also become a father to Shirley's daughter, Ann-Marie and a grandfather to her son, Daniel.  

He was predeceased by his brother, Edward; sisters, Florence Fraser and Ruth Johnson; sons, Brian and Donald Jr.  His remaining sibling, his sister, Charolette Simone continues to live in Ontario.

The service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Monday, March 18, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Willis Ott officiating. Burial will be directly after the service at Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Everyone is welcome. Donations to be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #24, Bridgewater.
