Obituary of Gordon Harold Barnhill

BARNHILL, Gordon Harold - passed away peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center, Infirmary Site, Halifax, on August 28^th, 2019 at the age of 77.

Gordon was born on January 18^th, 1942 in Halifax and is survived by his wife, Edith Barnhill; his mother, Marie (nee Beazley) Barnhill; he was the very loved father, of Cameron; John (Susan Cross); Jennie (Peter MacGregor); and Loree (Paul Ryan); cherished grandfather, of Chris and Cody (Cameron); Connor and Victoria (John) Candace; Tyler and Keira (Loree); and great grandfather, of Lily and Sydney (Candace); much loved by brothers, Sandy (Joan); David (Susan); and Dan (Melissa Mansfield); and his favorite sister, Barbara (Chesley Walters); as well as several loved nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who are far too numerous to name. Gordon was predeceased by his father, Gordon Barnhill.

Gordon began his financial career with Trans Canada Credit and then worked for the Royal Bank for 28 years in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick until his retirement. Not one to stand still too long, he then become the Chief Financial Officer for Silver Spruce Resources Inc. and continued working there until the time of his death. Gordon served on the board of directors for Big Brothers and Big Sisters Nova Scotia for several years.

He was an avid salmon fisherman and hunter and has left behind many happy memories of salmon fishing on the St Mary’s River and hunting on his beloved Toilet Hill with both his family and close friends.  

The family wishes to thank the incredible nurses of the IMCU at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, for the love and affection they showed our Dad and us during this very hard time. Without them providing him with their outstanding skills we would have been lost, they went above and beyond with our father. 

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, where a visitation will be on August 30^th, 2019 between 7-9p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1p.m. on Saturday, August 31^st, 2019 at the Bridgewater Baptist Church, 564 Glen Allan Drive, Bridgewater, Rev. Dr. Aaron Kenny officiating.
