We were sad to hear of Gordon's passing. We are not able to attend his service but will be reminiscing today of all the memories that we shared with Gordon and Doris. Norm has known Gordon for over 50 years. The exhibition and the fairs that they both attended rain or shine. He will be missed by many ,many people. I know when ever I hear an ox bell I will be reminded of Gordon. We send our prayers to the family...

Clayton, Carolyn and family,
Some of my fondest memories are from the time spent in the ox pull ring with Gordon and Doris at the south shore exhibition. They were a wonderful couple and Gordon truly was truly unique... a "one of a kind." He will be greatly missed but always fondly remembered. Kimberley sends her condolences from Calgary. With deepest sympathy, Blain Henshaw

The Gammons from Peru, Maine send our love and prayers to our NS family and friends -
I have attached a couple of poems I have written about our friend, Gordon
The first one is a rewrite of the poem I wrote when my father-in-law, Warren Gammon passed and the second one is a poem I tried to write about his life - May we all find comfort in the memories we have of Gordon
Gordon Lohnes - Ox Teamster
A new ox teamster has entered the pull
His entrance fee – paid in full.
He has joined teamsters gone on before
Pulling his cattle through Heaven’s door.
No more chores will he need to do.
Shovels and pails handed down to me and you.
Now each time an ox’s name is called
Or a loaded drag is being hauled
If you listen closely to the crowd
Gordon’s coaching will be heard so loud.
He would want each of you here today
To carry on the ox teamsters’ way.
Shoeing and Training cattle or making a yolk from a yellow birch tree
Pulling your oxen at the fairs is where he would want you to be.
So for Gordon please continue to work your oxen and horses too
And think of him and all the teamsters passed on each time you do.
Brenda Gammon

The Legend
Twas the year 1929 when born was a little baby boy
Foster and Florence Lohnes’ hearts were filled with joy
Gordon Foster Lohnes was the name they gave to him
In his family he was one of 7 boys and 6 girls - 13 siblings
Gordon grew up knowing what it meant to work in him instilled
Cutting and hauling wood with his dad from Hardwood Hill
Four and a half hours the oxen would take
To haul the wood to Bridgewater some money to make
When he was in his mid-teens he took a pair of cattle 7 miles up the road
To the blacksmith shop to have shoes put on as by his dad he was told
When just one shoe was secured in place the blacksmith said he was done
And on that very day Gordon’s shoeing career had begun
At the age of 18 or so Gordon got a pair of oxen of his very own you see
He could not get a pair until he could feed them with his own money
Shoeing and Training cattle was not all that Gordon knew how to do
Making head yolks for oxen was another talent he had too
He married the love of his life when his beloved Doris his wife became
Three children they’d have – Carmen Carolyn and Clayton were their names
In Upper Northfield, Lunenburg Gordon and Doris raised their family
With their children - 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren life was so happy
Gordon became known as a legend in the ox pulling world we all know
In 1967 in the first International Ox Pull he made a great show
He traveled between the Big Ex and Maine to pull and judge for many years
We all know how much he loved being around horses, oxen and steers
Gordon has now passed through Heaven’s gates and you can bet
He is gathering up all the teamsters that he can get
Oh what pulls they will have in Heaven with Gordon leading the way
Until we see you again Gordon – pull pull away

I was very sorry to learn of Gordon's passing. I have fond memories of my many conversations with Gordon over the years. These conversations mainly took place during the South Shore Exhibition each summer but some were at the farm in Upper Northfield. This is a photo I took of Gordon many years ago. He was a wealth of information and he was always willing to share and explain all the intricate aspects of farm life, raising and training oxen and how to hand carve a yoke for a team of oxen.
He was like a library to me. I always wanted to be sure of my facts so I would drop in and visit Gordon. He always had all the answers to my questions.
He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

Carolyn, sending our sympathy to you and Clayton and the family. I will never forget Gordon and Dad sitting at the table in the rec. room telling each other stories of oxen and Christmas treeing and hashing over the the world in these last years. We were lucky to have our Dads so long, but I know well the big space they leave in us and in our lives when they are gone. Thinking of you now and in the days ahead. Donna Seamone (on behalf of Virginia and the family). Our hearts go out to you.
