I think the happiest I have ever been in my life was when we lived in Oakhill, roughly two miles from Bridgewater on the highway that continued toward Halifax. This is because of Bunty, or Margaret Silver, my friend. It has been many years since I last saw and spoke to Bunty, but she remains one of the nicest people I have ever known in my life—and not just Bunty, but her entire family. Mr. and Mrs. Silver were lovely people who accepted me into their home, and Murray, Bunty’s brother, was kindness personified.
I met Bunty in the little one-room schoolhouse that taught up to Grade nine. I think Bunty and I were both in Grade 7. My family had moved to Oakhill sometime in the early spring of the year 1949. I at first tried to walk the two miles to Bridgewater High School and then gave up and entered the small schoolhouse that was near to the old house that we rented. I remember that I wrote exams at the end of the school year and passed into Grade 8.
