Gary and I spent many weekends at his cottage in his younger years. I was one of the crew members that took many boats from the Lunenburg club in the weekly sailing races.
I could tell that sailing was his passion from the early years.
My condolences to his family at this most difficult time.
I will keep his family in my prayers.
Derrill Hynick a crew member from his early years.

William Gary Bennett, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, two days after his 78th birthday, at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, NS. Gary was the only child of the late Dr. William W. Bennett and Alice Elizabeth (nee Jackson). Gary was a true buccaneer who started his love of sailing on his pram, Firefly. His passion for sailing and to be on the ocean chasing his sea-faring adventures continued his entire life. A man who could talk to anyone, Gary loved to share his many life stories which were true to a fault with accurate details and recollection. His experiences gained him numerous friends. Once you met Gary you did not forget him. Gary, originally from Bridgewater, had lived in Halifax but retired to ‘The Camp’ on Herman’s Island, Lunenburg County. He worked diligently improving his summer residence until his beloved home was winterized for year round enjoyment. Each and every one of Gary’s cherished dogs, both purebred and rescue (too many to name), delighted in every minute they spent with him at The Camp. The door was always open and the welcome mat out for friends and family to drop in, visit and stay awhile. Starting out in sales, Gary was also a machinist at the Dockyard; but, his true vocation was an accomplished carpenter and passionate boat builder. One of Gary’s biggest achievements was building his 43 foot, Ted Hood designed yawl, MAIA, a boat he poured his heart and soul into completing. There are many friends, family, visitors, even mere acquaintances that assisted in one way or another in the building of this yawl. Gary was in the middle of building another boat when his time ran out. Generous to a fault, many people will remember Gary doing a good deed for them, lending his truck, helping in some manner or being there when called upon. Gary was a man who lived bigger than life, many, many times over.
Gary is survived by his wife Loretta Agnes (nee Curran); his three daughters: Lori Ann Elizabeth (Mimo Farid), Alison Rebecca (Alex Torbert) and Catherine Jean; cherished granddaughters: Raquel and Marielle Farid. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
‘May you have fair winds and a following sea.’

I loved the pictures, especially that wedding picture of young Gary and Loretta. I remember how happy I and all Loretta's friends were we we heard that she and Gary were married. Then when their three beautiful-inside and out- daughters came along, we were even happier. I enjoyed Gary's zest for life, his enthusiasm for anything to do with sailing and their life on Herman's Island. We had many great conversations and I will always remember what happy New Year's Eve parties he and Loretta hosted complete with as much lobster( which Gary had driven to the South Shore to collect) that anyone could ever want. Love Gerry
