So very saddened to hear about the passing of a dear friend and neighbour. To the family, you are in our thoughts and prayers. To James and her boys, keep her memories close. I was fortunate to have a conversation with Hope a few weeks prior to her passing. In this conversation, Hope expressed to me that she was thinking of her boys and grandchildren and what her loss would mean to them. She cherished her family and was so grateful for the care James provided to her during her illness. She called him her “Secretary” for keeping track of appointments and so on.
I would like to share another instance of Hope’s thoughtfulness. During the years before working, I became sick and was hospitalized. Our son’s birthday was approaching, and Hope made him a birthday cake in my absence. These are the kinds of things she would do from the kindness of her heart. I will never forget that day so long ago, and how thankful I was to have such a dear neighbour to “step up to the plate” when I couldn’t. The fact of her donating her body to Science is just one more selfless act that always came easy for her. Rest In peace Hope, and know you will never be forgotten.

My beautiful, kind, sweet, gentle Mother-in-law, Hope, (or “Mom C” to me), passed away somewhat suddenly last week after suffering with ALS.
I often imagined us both older, my kids grown a bit, enjoying tea and teasing my father-in-law, James. I expected us to become even better friends as years passed, and I am devastated that we will never get to do that. She was healthy and active before she got sick, enjoyed her walks, gym classes, going to Tim’s with some of her friends from gym class or with friends from her many years at Zellers. She loved getting out to enjoy “jam sessions” at the fire hall with James, and going on outings with the photo club. She enjoyed travelling, Disney and cruises.
She loved her boys and grandchildren.
I’ll take good care of Derek and the girls, Mom C. I hope you’re able to move freely, without pain, wherever you might be. I know you do in my memories. I love you dearly-you won’t be forgotten.
ALS is a brutal illness, one that not enough is known about. It seems particularly cruel that her illness struck during the pandemic, and limited our ability to see her.
My heart is broken.
My sister in law, Cam wrote a beautiful tribute that I think captures her well:
“As one of the gentlest and kindest matriarchs, Hope will always be admired for setting the example as a community leader. Always enthusiastic, thoughtful and generous, forever remembered by her family.
Hope’s memory will be forever cherished by her husband James, three sons - Derek, Kevin, Paul and their partners, and four grandchildren. “
-Susan Feltham (Derek’s wife, Hope’s daughter-in-law)

James, Derek, Kevin, Paul & Families:
Our hearts are heavy in learning today of Hope's passing. In recent months I have had the most wonderful lengthy conversation with this dear soul --- she displayed strength in sharing her diagnosis of the terrible affliction of ALS. She talked about the excitement of the birth of her twin grandsons, as well as her pride in all her immediate family. We know she loved to travel and talked about her amazing trips. Our thoughts of Hope are that she was a kind, gentle and caring person. Our lives were made richer by knowing her, for which we are so thankful. We go back a ways in being privileged to know her parents through music. May your precious memories sustain you now and in the days ahead. You were so blessed to have this sweet person as your soulmate, mother, grandmother and friend. We loved her, and will miss her. God Bless each one of you. Our Sincere Sympathy, Tender Thoughts and Prayers, Muriel & Wayne Hiltz

Dear James and Family, I knew dear Hope from our exercise class at Michelin. She was always ready for an adventure and we all enjoyed each other's company at coffee/tea upstairs after class. Together we had an hour of fun and conversation after class was over. Hope shared details of her family and we all understood what a proud and loving wife, mother, and grandmother she was. ALS is such a cruel disease which affects the whole family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you grieve her loss. May the Good Lord look down on you all and enfold you in his loving arms now and in the coming days. Sincerely, Ingrid Greek
