Obituary of Thelma Jane Bielby
Thelma Jane Bielby
November 28, 1931 – October 4, 2021
BIELBY, Thelma Jane - age 89, of Dayspring, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2021. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on November 28, 1931, to parents Edmund and Irene (Landry) Comeau.
Mom was a feisty, fast moving little ball of energy who loved her family and friends to no end. In her younger years she helped her family by taking care of her younger siblings. She worked hard (and partied a bit too) at the Naval Base in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. Mom always had a few funny stories she could tell you about the officers on the base. She also worked at the fish plant in Pembroke, Nova Scotia. From hanging the fish for smoking or packing the smoked fish for shipment to the customers, I can remember watching her and the other lady’s work. For a young child it was amazing to see.
Mom and Dad worked on the entertainment committee at the Yarmouth Legion. The day after a dance at the Legion we would go in to clean up. I remember finding the beads to a broken necklace all over the floor. They remain a prized possession of mine to this day.
When Dad and Mom hit the dance floor, they were quite spectacular. They loved to dance, especially a good jive. At my wedding I can remember how many people would stand back and watch them dance around the room.
When Dad was transferred for work to Bridgewater, we moved into a house in LaHave. Life changed for Mom as she didn’t go out to work anymore. She was now a housewife and stay-at-home mom. She was very devoted to her family and community.
She always looked forward to her trips home to visit family. Yarmouth was always home for her.
Her beloved son Gary died at the age of 21 in Yarmouth. Her husband Jack died in 1995. Now Mom and Dad are together again, dancing in Heaven, with Gary, and surrounded by their family and friends who have already left us.
She leaves behind daughter Bernadette (Bernie) Maughan; son-in-law Kerry Maughan; grandson, Tyler Maughan; granddaughter Michaela Maughan; great grandson Koden Maughan; great granddaughter, Azlyn Maughan; brothers Raymond and Billy; sisters Vickie Egan, Susan Dault; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents Thelma was predeceased by her loving husband John (Jack) Bielby; son Gary Comeau; brothers David, Sonny, Eddie and Carl; sisters Helen Muise, Shirley Taylor and Mary Poole.
A very special thank you to Linda Rhodenizer for her care of my mom. As mom would say, Linda was her adopted daughter. Blood relation or not Linda was a savior to me. She always knew what to do. To Joan and Nathan, Nanna loved you both.
Thanks to Carl and Debbie Hamm for everything they have done for Mom.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. No flowers by the family’s request. Donations in Thelma’s memory may be made to The Canadian Legion Branch 24, Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
A graveside committal for family and friends will be held at a later date.
