Obituary of Leland Eugene Wentzell

WENTZELL, Leland Eugene – Age 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2022, at the age of 95, in Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany.

Leland was born on April 3, 1927, to Ira and Mary Wentzell of Maplewood, Lunenburg Co. He married Evangeline (Hubley) in 1949, and they enjoyed 66 years together. They lived in Maplewood until 1999, when they moved to Bridgewater. The couple had a son and a daughter and welcomed many foster children into their home over three decades.

He was a longtime member of the Parkdale Maplewood Emanuel Baptist Church and then joined the Bridgewater Baptist Church after moving to Bridgewater.

Leland was known for his kind nature and positive outlook throughout his life. Music and entertaining others were very important to him. As a young man, he played on radio shows, travelling with a band to CKBW in Bridgewater, and to Windsor for solo live performances. He also travelled with a band, as well as with various other musicians to entertain throughout western Nova Scotia. He sang in the New Germany and Area Men’s Choir and the Emanuel Baptist Church choir. Leland and Evangeline instilled a love of music in their family and their home was often filled with the aroma of baking, the sound of friends, family and live music.

He is survived by his children, Jeff Wentzell (Patricia), Joanne Wentzell, Vincent Rhodenizer, Tim Kaizer, Teresa Kaizer (Gary) and Rick Feener (Majay); grandchildren, Sarah, Sam (Emily), Linden, Martin, Alex (Caitlyn), Kirkland (Kayla), Erickson; great-grandchildren, Ella and Rhett; and many nieces and nephews. Leland was predeceased by his wife, Evangeline; sister Glennie DeLong and brother Errol Wentzell.

A funeral service will be held Monday, May 16, at 2 p.m., in the Parkdale Maplewood Emmanuel Baptist Church, with Rev. Sam Jess officiating. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Leland’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkdale Maplewood Community Cemetery, Rosedale Home for Special Care, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, New Germany, where on-line condolences and donations may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
