Capt. Anson B. Conrad
82, Broad Cove. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Captain Anson Conrad in the Mahone Bay Nursing Home, Mahone Bay on March 10, 2009. Born in Broad Cove, he was a son of the late William and Blanche (Brown) Conrad. Anson trained in the army for the Second World War. He had a 44 year (27 years as captain) career of fishing starting at the age of 19and on the Grand Banks on the fishing schooners. He rose through the ranks at National Sea, winning many awards including the coveted award as top producing Captain in the fleet: Captain Highliner. He retired in 1988 and enjoyed his retirement years working on his wood lot and tending his gardens and property in Broad Cove. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24 in Bridgewater, as well as being an active member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church and the Broad Cove Community Hall. He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley (Rolffe); son, Bernard (Elizabeth), Broad Cove; daughter, Margo (Gary), Truro; grandchildren, Elsa and Nathan Conrad; step grandson, Derek Andersen; sister, Leah Boutilier. He was predeceased by 9 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7 to 9pm with a public legion tribute service being held at 7pm all in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be held 11am Friday in St Mark’s Anglican Church, Broad Cove, Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Canadee Cemetery, Broad Cove. No flowers by request.
