Obituary of Hazen Artworth Whynot

WHYNOT, Hazen Artworth – Age 83, of Bridgewater, formerly of Dayspring. Hazen passed away peacefully with his children by his side on September 19, 2023, at Hillside Pines Home for Special Care, Bridgewater. Born November 24, 1939 in Laconia, Hazen was a loving father and grandfather. His family meant everything to him.

Hazen was a quiet, kind, modest man who worked hard his entire life, but never more so than while raising his children. Hazen went to sea at a young age, working on the O.K. Service boats which took him all over the world. Later on, he ran his own taxi business, and through the contract he had with Michelin, transported people from all over the world to Bridgewater. Hazen spent most of his working life at National Sea, retiring in the late 90s.

Hazen was very proud of his home, yard, and garden. He loved to work outside tending his vegetable garden and keeping his property top notch. A “putterer” and a tinkerer, Hazen was very resourceful. If he needed something, Hazen did his best to make it out of bits he found around his barn.

As a father, Hazen was quiet, but Eric knew he was in big trouble when his Dad raised his voice. Trina had her father wrapped around her little finger. Hazen demonstrated the value of hard work through his actions and his children learned. He quietly made sure his children always had what they needed and sometimes what they wanted too.

Hazen was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents, Gilbert and Lillas (Deal); and his seven brothers, Curtis, Keith, Emerson, Leeman, Raymond, Roland, and infant Douglas. Hazen is survived by his children, Trina (Jeff) and Eric (Diane); grandchildren, Kelsey, Adam and (step) Rebecca; and his sister, Verlene. Hazen loved his family and instilled strong values that have served his children well. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

There will be a Public Visitation between 6pm and 8pm on Sunday, September 24th, at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Please join us for a Service in Celebration of Hazen’s life at 11am on Monday, September 25th, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, in Rhodes Corner, followed by a reception in the church hall immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or Hillside Pines Home for Special Care, Bridgewater. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York St., Bridgewater.

In the meantime, Hazen would love for you to raise a glass in his name. If you listen really hard, you might hear a rousing rendition of “There’s a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea” when you do.

Card of Thanks

For eight years, the kind staff at Hillside Pines took wonderful care of Hazen. The family wishes to extend their profound thanks to everyone at this facility for the wonderful work they do every day in providing care to their residents.
