Obituary of Mildred L. Dechman
Mildred L. Dechman
90, of Bridgewater passed away on January 16, 2009. Born in Glace Bay in 1918, she was the daughter of Emmaroy and Harry Sterns, with siblings Shirley McKenna (deceased), Stewart (Jeanette) Sterns and James (June) Sterns. Mildred graduated from MacDonald College, McGill University with a degree in Home Economics. After graduating she taught in Montreal West. In December 1941 she married Ted Gordon of Bay Roberts, NL. After his death in 1951 Mildred resumed teaching at Bicentennial Jr. High Scholl in Dartmouth. In 1955 she married Art Dechman and moved to Bridgewater where she spent the rest of her life. During this time Mildred was very active in community work: Instrumental in founding the Wee Wisdom Nursery School, Past President of the Bridgewater Ladies Curling Club, Hospital Auxiliary, Dawson Daisy, Bridgewater United Church, United Church Women, United Church choir, South Shore Regional Chorale. Mildred had a wonderful life in Bridgewater and had many dear friends. She will be truly missed. Mildred is survived by her daughters Glennie Gordon, Shirley Gordon, Sandy (Till) Gordon, Gail Dechman, Heather Dechman, her grandchildren Jim (Lori) Rofihe, Wendy Rofihe, Joann Rofihe, Chelsee Venedam and great grandchildren Alison Tedford and Selena Rofihe. Visitation will be held at Sweeny’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 20 from 2-4 pm, with a memorial service at the Bridgewater United Church on Wednesday, January 21 at 1 pm, Rev Ivan Norton officiating.
