Obituary of Donald Edward Getson

GETSON, Donald Edward - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Edward Getson, age 85, of Oakhill, on December 23, 2023, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Donald was a dedicated husband and father. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan and daughter, Sandra.

Born in Bridgewater to the late Rhoda (Whynot) and Eugene Getson, of Newcombville, Donald began his working life at a garage, but found his true passion when he went on to become a cook. For many years, he prepared meals on both land and sea, while employed by the CNR and the Department of Fisheries. He later opened the popular DJ's Canteen, in Newcombville.

A second source of joy for Donald was bluegrass music. As a self-described “grinner,” not a “picker,” he looked forward to spending his summers travelling with Joan, to listen to musical   performances at festivals in Nova Scotia and beyond. He also worked to promote bluegrass music through the South Shore Bluegrass Music Association.

Donald is survived by his brother, Hector (Joan), brother-in-law, Gerald McIntyre, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to all who helped and cared for Donald during his journey.

Please join the family in a Public Visitation that will take place at 1 p.m., Thursday, January 4^th, 2024, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. Remember Donald and honour his life at a Memorial Service, at Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater, on Thursday, January 4^th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Public Interment will be held in Newcombville Cemetery, immediately following the memorial service.
