Obituary of John Minard Penney
PENNEY, John Minard – It is with a deep sense of sadness and loss that the family of John “Jack” Minard Penney, age 89, of Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co., announce his passing on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.
Born in Caledonia, Queens Co., he was a son of the late Donald and Esther (Minard) Penney, formerly of Caledonia.
He graduated from Pine Grove school with grade 11, then after a year, he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served in various posts in Newfoundland, Labrador, Fredericton, Ottawa and Halifax and rose to the rank of Superintendent. After many highlights, he was also assigned as Prince Edward’s Personal Security Officer, for the three occasions when the Prince visited Canada. Jack enjoyed nature, especially fishing and hunting.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alicia (Fitzgerald) and brothers, William “Bill”, Gordon, Glenwood “Glenn”, Robert “Bob”; and nieces, Carolyn, Maureen and Carla.
Jack is survived by brother, Eugene Penney, Caledonia; sister, Dorothy (Rev. David) Lutes, Bridgewater; sisters-in-law, Kitty Myrick and her daughter, Kim, both of St. John’s, NL; Lila Penney, Kingston; Elizabeth Penney, Bridgewater; Diane Penney, St. John's, NL; nieces and nephews, Karen, Karl (Kelly), Robin, Bethany, Billy, Eric, Cheryl and Donald.
No visitation at the funeral home by request. Service of Remembrance will be 11 a.m., Monday, August 19 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, with Rev. David Lutes officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Family flowers only please, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Rosedale Home for Special Care or a charity of choice.
