Obituary of Virginia Gladys Corkum

CORKUM, Virginia Gladys – Age 87, of New Cumberland.

We would like to share the passing of our mother on September 27, 2024, at the Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay, with son and daughter by her side. She was a true angel who saw the good in everyone and everything. Only gone a short time but the hole in our hearts from your absence will always remain forever. The only relief is so many good memories of your love, kindness, support and guidance over the years.

She was known as “Virginia”, but we called her “Momma”. She was born in Pleasantville to the late, James and Gladys (Richard) Rafuse. She lived most of her life in New Cumberland. She was married to Ralph Corkum Sr., and they had 7 children together. Momma always enjoyed family get togethers, and family life the most. Later in her life she loved spending time with her grandchildren and was a big part of their lives.

She is survived by her children, Philip (Carol) Corkum, Pleasantville, Marion Shaw, New Cumberland, Susan Corkum (Alister), North River, Nancy (Frank) Arsenault, Ralph Jr. (Christine) Corkum, New Cumberland, Reuben (Nena) Corkum, New Cumberland, and James (Melanie) Corkum, Cole Harbour; 17 Grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Ralph Corkum Sr.; sisters, Doris and Marie; brother, Carleton; nephew, Lloyd Rafuse; son-in-law, Lloyd Shaw Jr.; and eldest grandson, Judson Shaw.

Although flowers are accepted by the family, memorial donations may be made to the Brain Canada Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society of N.S., or charity of choice. A public visitation will be held Friday, October 4th, beginning at 12 noon, followed by a funeral service for Virginia at 1 p.m. the same day, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home chapel, Bridgewater, with Rev. Willis Ott officiating the funeral. A private family burial will be held in New Cumberland Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York St., Bridgewater, where online messages of condolence and donations may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.

“We love you Momma, and will never forget you.”
