My condolences to the Danson family.
For myself and my cousin Julie, the two cellists in our family, Jim was our go-to for all instrument related issues when we were growing up. I lived abroad for a long time but in more recent years, the Bowed Instrument Shop has provided many services to myself and my students, including transforming some "found" cellos into delightfully playable instruments. Jim will be missed.
With special best wishes to daughter Gwen,
Elizabeth Sircom

My condolences to the family
Mr Danson came into my elementary school and talked about the violin. I went home and asked my Mom if I could learn to play (of course she said yes) - fast forward almost 40 years and I still speak often of him and how his love of music rubbed off on me. How I couldn't quit lessons because Mom told me I had to tell Mr Danson I didn't want to play anymore myself - I couldn't do it. I didn't want to let him down, so I kept going
My first full sized violin was in pieces when we got it and Mr Danson put it together for me. It is still the most beautiful sounding violin I have ever played.
My heart is full when anyone asks how/when I started playing and I get to tell this story and talk about an amazing person/teacher.

My heartfest sympathy to the family.
I knew Jim initially as a student ...then as a colleague and friend. In 1968 he was the first violin participant in the newly launched Department of Music at Dalhousie where I had been engaged as an instructor. Over the ensuing years, his friendship and skillful care of my instruments was much appreciated. He will be missed.

Sending condolences to all the members of Jim's family. In the 1970s, Jim procured for me an upgraded student violin (my original violin was purchased at Zellers) and he did maintenance on my violins in the multiple decades since. I always appreciated my stops at the shop in Halifax and a chance to have a quick chat about violin repair and maintenance. Jim's ability to fix things, his quiet and calm demeanor and his gentle kindness will be missed. Donna Rhodenizer

Our condolences to Jim’s families. And, thank you Jim, we are grateful to you for bringing the violin to our students at East St. Margarets back in the day. Your patient and encouraging teaching engaged children in the discovery of their ability to be musical. A wonderful accomplishment.

I met Jim in 1993 when he came to be the first teacher for our fledgling community based string programme, The Kingston Strings. He was the perfect person to get us off to a great start. His patience, attention to detail and good humour endeared him to all of us: students, parents and volunteers alike. He also quickly became a very good friend, something he knew how to do so well. Thank you, Jim.

Jim was such a kind and wonderful person treasured by so very many. I loved having him as a colleague & friend at MCPA. Jim was always so encouraging & awesome with the violin students & families. So grateful to have known Jim for over 35 years- I proudly purchased my bows from him and he did beautiful work on my violin. But what I will miss most about Jim is his kindness and that twinkle in his eye. Forever in our hearts Jim. My deepest sympathy to all of Jim’s family & many friends.

I met Jim and his sister Lynne at Amherst Regional High School sometime back in the 1960ties. His father was our industrial arts teacher.
Little did I know at that time, that Jim would rehair and repair my great grandfather's bow and fiddle. I didn't play the fiddle back then or even own one. Jim composed a fiddle tune called Lady Slipper Waltz. A beautiful tune. Jim provided a great service to us fiddlers with his repair and rehair abilities. He will be missed.
My sincerest condolences to the family.

Dear Ruth and Lynne,
Am thinking back to those many years ago in the Dal Music department, when Jim was one of the youngest members of our group and a very keen one. Lots of great times, both in and out of the classroom. Despite not seeing him since, I know he accomplished much with his talents. Sending heartfelt sympathy to you and all of Jim's loved ones. He will be missed by many but remembered well.

To Sue and both Jim & Sue's families, our heartfelt condolences at Jim's passing. We didn't know him well, only through Sue's son Ian McRuer, and we live in Calgary. The other condolences on this page say everything we could say, but with so much more knowledge of him. Sue, please accept our deepest sympathies. All our love and prayers at this sad moment in time - Julie and Stephen.

To Sue and family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing. He was an extraordinary person whose talent and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Attached are photos of the beautiful repair he made to my violin—a testament to his incredible skill and the care he poured into his craft. This violin still sings because of him, and I will always think of him whenever I play it.
Please know that my thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Jim will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the music he made possible.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Hok and Rachel Kwan
