Burdette was born in Westfield, Queens Co and as a young woman attended nursing college in Halifax, where she met the love of her life, Maurice DeLory. Burdette and Mike married in 1955 and lived in Annapolis Royal, Shelburne and Halifax before settling in Bridgewater to raise their family.
Burdette had a mind for business and an entrepreneurial spirit. She opened the Wade House Restaurant and Lounge in Bridgewater and also founded the local newspaper, South Shore News. Never one to stop learning, she later obtained her real estate license and was a budding author, often researching and writing about political history and Nova Scotia.
Always politically engaged, Burdette was a long-time supporter of the Liberal Party. She was passionate about promoting the culture of the South Shore and was known for her involvement in the LaHave Island Museum and the LaHave River Smelt Fishing Tournament.
Burdette is remembered for her love of music, quick wit and dry sense of humour. A devoted grandmother in her later years, Burdette spent countless hours with her three granddaughters singing at the piano, playing cards and watching musicals. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
The family wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to the staff of the South Shore Regional Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care.
A private memorial will be held by family. Donations may be made to South Shore Regional Hospital or Second Story Women’s Centre.
