Ruby L. Lohnes (Mason)
Of Caledonia, It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ruby L. (Mason) Lohnes surrounded by her devoted husband and family on Nov. 25 2007. Ruby was born at home on December 13, 1925 at Head of St. Margaret’s Bay N.S. She was the eleventh of twelve children of Loftus and Emma (Pegg) Mason. As a young woman she attended St. Margaret’s Bay School to grade eleven. During this same period she worked as a phone operator in her home where her mother managed the office of Maritime Tel, and Tel. She also worked as a clerk in the local general store, owned and operated by her brother Fred, until her marriage. Ruby was married at St. George's Anglican Church on November 22, 1952, to Gerald Lohnes who worked as a Station Agent for CNR for a period in 1951 and 1952 at French Village Station in Tantallon N.S. They moved to Yarmouth N.S. and finally to Caledonia, Queens County, where her husband was the Station Agent for many years. During her time as a most wonderful wife, mother and grandmother she was very active in the community of Caledonia especially the Red Cross, North Queens Nursing Home, school committees and Meals on Wheels and was an active member of the Anglican Church. Ruby enjoyed cooking and baking for all the local events and many of the people in the community remarked on the fact that you never left Ruby's home without partaking in many of her goodies.
