Obituary of Barbara Alice Nickerson

Barbara Alice Nickerson (Irwin) 79, Pleasantville, Lunenburg Co. NS, passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2009. Born in Halifax on October 9, 1929, she was the oldest child of the late Marion (Turner) and Elmer Irwin. Growing up in Sheet Harbour, NS “Barb” met her beloved late husband Ronald “Nick” at Acadia University in 1948, from where she graduated, Class of 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts and Secretarial Science Degree. Upon leaving University, she worked as a secretary in Montreal, where Nick joined her and they later married in 1952. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who enjoyed her family, friends, home and gardens. For several years she collected for the Heart and Stroke, Diabetes, Cancer and Arthritis Foundations. She also volunteered at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater for a period of 18 years. She is survived by sons Hugh (Pam), Port Williams; Scott (Patricia Veniott), Truro; Kent (Julie), Liverpool; grandchildren, Hannah and Jakob, Liverpool; brothers, Arthur Irwin (Eileen), Halifax; Robert (Marion) Irwin, Empress, AB; sister Sheila (John) Rowand, Victoria, BC. Cremation has taken place, with family internment in Liverpool. A memorial service to celebrate Barb’s life will be held on Friday, August 28, at 2 p.m., at the United Baptist Church, 307 King St., Bridgewater NS. Rev. Norman Hovland, Rev. Eric Campbell and Rev. Sarah Scott will be officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Ron and Barbara Nickerson Scholarship fund, Acadia University, Wolfville, NS, B4P2R6 or a charity of choice.
