Obituary of Madeline M. Wentzell

Madeline "Maddie" Marguerite Wentzell 79. It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Madeline Marguerite at home, on Friday, August 7, 2009. Born on July 9, 1930 in Bridgewater, she was the eldest daughter of the late Edmund (Ted) and Alma (Whynot) Hubley. Maddie, as she was known by her many friends was a lifelong resident of Bridgewater. Family was very important to her and they were always included in her many visits. Her two grandchildren, Luke and Kate Wentzell were her pride and joy. Maddie enjoyed life and had many hobbies and interests. She started working at the tender age of 15, delivering telegrams for CNR telegraphs, by bicycle. She made many friends over her life having worked at Benjamins Photography, Dominion, Sobeys and Charm Jewelers, where she gained a reputation of always being a very friendly and helpful clerk. She was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She was an ardent gardener and member of the Bridgewater Garden Club, Seniors Club, where she enjoyed a game of 45’s. She was a past member of the Bridgewater Curling Club. She was a charter member of the Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary, having received an award for 43 years of service. She was a staunch member of the Liberal party, having received a certificate of appreciation for her faithful service. In her early years she enjoyed skating, the art of painting and dancing. Her gift of floral arranging was well known by her family and many friends. In later life she and her husband enjoyed many hours of fishing and attending to her beautiful gardens. Maddie is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Carl; son Kevin (Margo); grandchildren Luke and Kate; sisters, Greta (Bill) Gatchell of Truro; Virginia (Bob) Murray of Moncton N.B.; sisters in law Verna Hubley of Bridgewater; Elsie Farquar of British Columbia and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Monday from 7 to 9pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. A memorial service will be held 2pm Tuesday in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, Rev Paul Jensen officiating. Private family burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
