Helen Louise Corkum
Bridgewater passed away Thursday June 3, 2010 at the South Shore Regional Hospital Bridgewater. Helen was born in Bridgewater on February 9, 1912 and was a daughter of the late C. Willis and Lottie Mae. She received her business training at the Maritime Business College in Halifax and upon graduation she returned to Bridgewater where she was employed until her marriage. Helen was a bookkeeper by profession and she and her late husband founded and operated Bridgewater Motors for 26 years. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of Mae#38 Bridgewater, Shoreham #59 Chester and honorary member of Grace #8 Lunenburg. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile and past president of the Bodora club in Bridgewater. She was a member of the Bridgewater Baptist Church being active in the Group #4 Missionary club. She served four years on the board of directors of Children’s Aid Society. Her hobby was knitting and later hooked rugs and since a stroke in approximately 2005 she hooked approximately 12 rugs for her friends and charity. In 1938 she married Orren Corkum and had three children, Charles Emmerson, Faye Louise and Chris Orren. She is survived by her children and three grandchildren and a sister Louise L. Hirtle. She was predeceased by her husband and twin brothers, Raymond and Ronald. Visitation 1 p.m. Monday 7 June, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, with an Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and funeral service to begin at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Order Of the Eastern Star – Estral Fund or Daughters of the Nile – Shriner’s Hospital.
