Obituary of Marjorie Elaine Larouche

Marjorie Elaine Larouche With heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Marjorie Elaine (Hickman) Larouche on March 17, 2010, at the age of 88. She had a long and difficult illness which she endured with amazing dignity and grace and only six weeks ago she was predeceased by her husband, USMC Colonel Charles Larouche (Ret'd). She leaves to mourn sister, Eleanor (Toni) Davis, Halifax; brother, Donald Hickman, Kentville; stepdaughters, Dr. Stephanie Sgouros, New Jersey, her children, Angelica and Rebecca and Roxane Alamo (Richard), Boston; nieces, Cynthia Black (Ian), Kentville; Elizabeth (Johnston) Hickman, Lower Sackville; Cheryl McKenzie (Colin), Mississauga; Jane Davis (Stan), Halifax; Dr. Joann Davis (Sean), Halifax; and nephew, Gerald Davis (Elizabeth), Halifax. Born in Oxford on August 19, 1921, to Rhoma May (Lowther) Hickman and Renforth Rolph Hickman, Marjorie graduated from Acadia University and Business School before moving on to Goose Bay, Labrador where she worked for nine years in the office of the C.O. of the U.S. Air Base during the Second World War. An interesting position with the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. led to her meeting and marrying Charlie, who was soon to be retired. They moved to Nova Scotia and their home in Camperdown, Lunenburg Co. was to be a vibrant scene for over 35 years. Essentially a city girl, Marjorie became an enthusiastic and dedicated 2I/C. as Charlie - always an outdoor man - bred, raised, trained, showed and hunted his many beagles and labradors. Marjorie was active in local affairs and enjoyed participating in the political scene. She will be remembered as an independent thinker who always expressed herself in a forthright and often feisty manner. On the subject of women in politics, she was a tireless champion. She acted as Secretary-Treasurer of the SPCA for ten years and was also on the library board for many years. Both she and Charlie were keen bridge players. Their home was always a gracious and welcoming place for their many friends and family and their parties were frequent and memorable. Together she and Charlie created their own unique lifestyle in the community they came to love. Their extensive travels also provided many wonderful experiences, among them Hawaii, Samoa, New Guinea; several islands (Guadacanal, Saipan and Tinian) where Charlie had fought as a marine in the Second World War; a safari in Africa and a cruise to South East Asia. Even in failing health Marjorie never gave up her interest in staying current and read her newspaper from front to back every day of her life. Her high standards of quality in every aspect of her life were appreciated and valued by friends and family alike. Her intelligence, warmth, loyalty and kindness set her apart and her loss has created a void that will be deeply felt by all of us who knew and loved her. It is difficult to offer enough praise to all the kind and compassionate caregivers who looked after Marjorie and Charlie over the past few years: a heartfelt thank you goes to Letha, Pat, Kathryn, Linda, Tina, Wanda, Joan, Barb and Nannu; and Donna Curry, Care Choices. You were wonderful. A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced. On-line condolences may be made at: www.sweenysfuneralhome.com. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA, Pine Grove Cemetery (Oxford) or a charity of your choice.
