Obituary of John James MacNeil

John James MacNeil 75, Bedford, NS passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 31, 2010 at the VG Site, QEII. John was a son of the late Jeremiah and Mary MacNeil (Nowlan) of St. Andrew’s, NS. He was born October 16, 1934 in Chatham, NB. He was a school teacher in Ontario and in the Dartmouth School System for 35 years and throughout his retirement, enjoyed his part-time employment with Securitas Canada. He was an active member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church where he participated in the choir and the Council of Catholic Men. John was a regular blood donor to the Canadian Red Cross and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch 160 in Dartmouth. He volunteered as a coach for the Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association and on the board of the East Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many other sports. He was a gifted singer and shared his love of music at many special occasions and family get-togethers. He was well known for his sense of humour and outgoing personality. He took great pride in his family and cherished spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings. John is survived by his loving wife Josie (Kliza); four children Alison O’Neil (Shaun), Paul (Amy), Jennifer Moore (Steven), Steven (Tracey); grandchildren Gregory, Megan, Sarah, Kristen, Ryan, Matthew, Laura, Hannah, Jenna, Bradley, and Kayley; siblings Aileen Beed (Ron), Marie, Sister Claire, Florence Leaman (Frank), Jerry (Donna) and Arthur (Janet) as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Zachary, in infancy. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be held 11am Tuesday, September 7, 2010 in St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, 1 Kuhn Drive, Dartmouth. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Myeloma Canada. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
