Obituary of Donald Joseph Pernette
Donald Joseph Pernette
80, West LaHave, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater with his family by his side. Born in the family home in West LaHave in 1929, he was the youngest son of the late Josiah and Winnie (Richard) Pernette. Donald began his career at Superline Oils in Halifax where he worked for a year before taking to the seas on the Shell Oil boats for nine years. He then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a radar technician. Over the next 24 years, he rose to the rank of Warrant Officer and served on Air Force bases across Canada, USA and Europe, with his final posting in Shearwater. He retired in 1979 and opened Pernette’s Store in Pleasantville, which he ran for 4 years. He then retired for good to his vegetable and flower gardens and his woodlot. Donald and Chloe took many trips back to the damn to take the grandchildren fishing; always keeping an eye out for the perfect branch for his next cane. The news was always on at Dad’s house and he could always be counted on for an up to date weather forecast. His daily trips to town were a highlight of his day. Donald was a family man who was quietly proud of his children, sons-in-law; daughters-in-law and grandchildren. He was a great Dad. Memories of our family get togethers at Poppa’s house will always be in our hearts. Surviving are his children, Alan (Annette), Crescent Beach; Dawn (John) Millett, Northwest; Daphne (Paul) Hayward, West Dublin; Chris (Karla), West LaHave; Christine (Adam) Gladwin, Bridgewater; twelve precious grandchildren; sister, Yvonne Haughn, West LaHave; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Elmeda; sisters, Helena, Katherine, Avernia; brothers, Harry, John, Percy and his dog, Chloe. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, May 7, 2010 in West Side United Church, Pentz. Rev. Neil McEwen officiating. Family flowers only, memorial donations may be made to the LaHave and District Fire Department, South Shore Regional Hospital or charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where on-line condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
A special thank you to Dr. David Barss, and the doctors and nursing staff of South Shore Regional Hospital for their support and compassion during this difficult time.
