Garth Edward Baker
Of Vogler's Cove, fell asleep peacefully in the arms of his Lord making his new home in eternity, on April 15, 2011, at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in West Dublin, NS on June 20, 1925, Garth was the only son of the late Enos and Dorothy (Walfield) Baker. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Evelyn (Whynott/Reinhardt); children, Dianne (Lloyd) Swinemar, Lower Sackville, NS; Douglas (Janice) Baker, Beaverlodge, AB; Alan (Jill) Baker, Kamloops, BC; Sharon Ewald, Markham, ON.; stepchildren, Susan (Kenneth) Baker, Dartmouth, NS; and Julia (Kenneth) Wamboldt, Lawrencetown, NS; Grandchildren - Jennifer Swinemar, Rebecca (Jimmy) Nickerson, Christina (Shane) Diederich, Derrick (April) Baker, Melissa (Roy Fletcher) Baker, Keenan Baker, Michelle (Massimo) Perricone, Robert Baker, Charity Baker, and Justin (Sheena) Wamboldt; and Great Grandchildren - Austin Nickerson, Bradley, Jessica, & Alexandra Ford, Rachelle Diederich; Michael Walters, Brooklyn & Derrick Jr. Baker; Breanne Fletcher; and Brianna, Ryan & Kaylee Baker. He is also survived by half sisters, Doris Barron, Halifax, and Hazel (Burton) DeAdder, Greenwood, NS, and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all of his loved ones, including Evelyn's foster daughter, Sandra Selig, Vogler's Cove, NS. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather, Eldred Publicover; half brother, Sinclair Publicover, stepson, Andrew Reinhardt, infant granddaughter, Jacqueline Baker. Garth spent his working life at sea, beginning as a young boy fishing with his stepfather. He was in service during the war, sailing with the Merchant Marines. From there he worked on the Mersey ships, hauling pulpwood between Brooklyn, NS and Cornerbrook, NF. After securing his diesel engineering certification, he worked at National Sea Products, Imperial Oil, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, and retired after serving as Chief Engineer with DFO in 1987.Garth was a Life member of Bridgewater Legion #24, as well as a member of FSNA. After moving to Vogler's Cove 39 years ago, he became active at St. Alban's Anglican Church, serving as Warden until his death. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff, nurses and physicians at the South Shore Regional Hospital who provided such kind care for him during his illness. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Monday) at Sweeny's Funeral Home, 60 Phoenix Street, Bridgewater, between 7-9 pm, with a public Legion Tribute Service at 7:00 P.M. A Service celebrating Garth's life will be at St. Alban's Anglican Church, Voglers Cove on Tuesday, April 19th beginning at 2 p.m. Reception to follow at Cherry Hill Fire Hall. Family flowers only.
