Obituary of Arlene Mae Conrad
Arlene Mae Conrad
Age 96, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2011 at Hillside Pines Nursing Home, Bridgewater. Arlene was born in New Canada on March 11th, 1915 and was the daughter of the late William and Stella (Wentzell) Veinot. She is survived by daughter in-law, Carolyn Conrad; grandchildren Andrea (Lender Bowles) Conrad, Daniel (Tracy) Conrad and great-grandchildren Stella, William, Claire, Maxwell, and sister Bernice Wentzell. Arlene attended a small schoolhouse in New Canada and was very proud to have completed grade 10. At that time, Grade 10 was considered quite an achievement! She then left home and worked for a farmer’s family in the Annapolis Valley. After a short time there, she moved back to Bridgewater and lived/worked at the Fairview Hotel until years later she met and married Merlin. She then moved into his family home in Upper LaHave where she lived for the majority of her life. Her husband died in a car crash in 1967. She never remarried. Her life’s pride was her family. When her son became sick and died 14 years ago, she never really recovered. As a devote Christian, Arlene was a member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Upper LaHave. Arlene had a passion for gardening and had flowers (especially roses) everywhere. She was a wonderful homemaker and spent her time sewing, knitting, reading, cooking and working in her gardens. She was predeceased by her husband Merlin Conrad, only child William (Billy), brothers, Alvin, Clarence and Arthur Veinot. Funeral service will be held 2pm Tuesday, August 23rd at Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater, Rev. Dr. Ben Coltvet officiating. Visitation will take place prior to the service at 1pm. A private family burial will follow the service at the Dayspring Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Memorial donations in Arlene’s memory may be made to Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, or the charity of choice. The family would like to send a very special thank-you to the staff at Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, for their many years of care for Arlene. Also the staff at Hillside Pines for making her final days so special. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, especially her family. We would also like to thank everyone for the phone calls, cards and e-mails. Your kindness has been greatly appreciated.
