Obituary of Ronald Edward Grimm
Ronald Edward Grimm
95, Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay, formerly of Parkdale, Lunenburg Co. It is with great sadness we announce the quiet passing of Roland Edward Grimm in the Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site, Halifax on Thursday, June 30, 2011 with close family members by his side. Born in Parkdale, he was a son of the late Edward and Vera (Spidle) Grimm. In his early years Roland worked with his father Edward in the forest industry. In June 1941 he joined the Canadian Army and served overseas in the second world war, returning home in 1945 to his wife and 4 and a half year old son, Ronald Jr., who was born while he was away. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Guides Association and attended International Sporting Events in Canada and the United States participating in log rolling, canoe racing and cross cut saw competitions. He was a member of Emmanuel United Baptist Church of Parkdale / Maplewood. He operated the family mixed farm raising beef, chicken broilers and hogs as well as harvesting logs, firewood, pulpwood and Christmas trees from the family woodlot. He and his father also worked in the harvesting of blueberries for some years producing over 20 tons of the product, employing local people to rake and clean the berries. He also developed a cottage lot subdivision on Sherbrooke Lake. He had a great passion for fishing, hunting and bingo, the latter being shared also by his wife of 70 years Edna. There are lots of stories about “the big one that got away” or “that 14 point buck that would eat his carrots and never show up” and “I was all set for the jackpot only needed N43”. He is survived by his wife Edna (Mosher), Mahone Bay; sons, Dwight (Barbara), Coldbrook; Wylie, Bridgewater; foster daughter, Janet (Earlen) Eisener, Farmington; foster son, Mike Smith, Trenton; sister, Audrey Wentzell, New Ross; 6 grandchildren, Melissa, Angela, Vance, Shawn, Todd and Kailey; 8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by son, Ronald Jr.; sisters, Marguerite Spidle, Ruth Wentzell, infant brother, Paul. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Mahone Nursing Home and the special nurses and doctors at the ICU unit of the Infirmary Hospital, Halifax.
