Obituary of Grace Susan Hatt

Grace Susan (Bond) Hatt Daughter of the late Viola and Russell Bond. Grace passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at home, surrounded by family and friends. Born in the former Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax March 18, 1948. Grace spent her childhood in Hebbville, went to school there, and later in Dartmouth after her mother passed away. In school, Grace was quite an athlete. She was involved in all sports. She was a member of the Bridgewater Golf and Country Club and enjoyed playing golf as a junior for years. She caddied for a lot of the older members, learning a lot about the game. She also took care of the lady’s position of the clubhouse. She worked during the summer at Indian Garden Restaurant in Hebbville. After school she started at the Railroad Restaurant until she joined Zellers in March 31, 1967 before the store was even built. She started as stockroom clerk. Later became stockroom manager. Grace did some travelling around N.S. and N.B. for Zellers setting up the new stores. In May of 1974, she transferred to Fredericton N.B. as stockroom manager there. The best way to meet new people is in sports, so she wasn’t there long before she was playing senior “A” ladies softball and travelling the province. She later got involved in broomball and bowling. Once her playing softball days were over, she became involved in coaching. She got very involved in competitive bowling. Her and her team travelled in the province on weekends, bowling in money tournaments. She bowled on the N.B. provincial team twice. In 1978 she left Zellers and joined Canada Post. In May 1982 she transferred back to Bridgewater to Bridgewater Post office. Returning home after 8 years, she decided the best way to meet people was again, in sports. She joined some bowling leagues and joined the golf club. It wasn’t long before she joined competitive ladies and mixed teams, and once again travelled weekends. She bowled on A.T.V Belvedere Challenge twice, both times placing third. Due to other interest and commitments she never played for years after that. In 1990, Grace bought a place in Hebbville and she joined the ladies auxiliary. Becoming a land owner, she became very interested in gardening, landscaping, carpentry and anything that needed to be done. Her and her dog Posty spent many hours walking and working on her property. She retired from Canada Post in 2004 and started playing golf again, playing at the Olde Town Golf Course. In 2007 she started playing at the Lunenburg Golf Club and enjoyed every minute, until she could no longer play. In 2006 she had her first bout with cancer. She fought it bravely and was in remission until June 2010, when the cancer returned. Again she fought it bravely, but eventually succumbed to the cancer. Grace is survived by son, Richard (Carolyn) Goodchild, Guelph Ont.; grandchildren, Zachary, Brodie and Avery; sister, Janet Simmons. She was predeceased by brother, David Bond. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Private family burial following the service. No flowers or visitation by request. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Salvation Army or S.H.A.I.D. Tree Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweeenysfuneralhome.com.
