Obituary of Captain Allan Douglas Latter
Captain (ret'd), Allan Douglas "Doug" Latter
81, Dartmouth, passed away at home with his family by his side on March 30, 2011. Doug was a son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Bowen-Smith) Latter of Bridgewater. Doug began a sea career as deck boy and progressed through the ranks obtaining his Masters Certificate. In 1961 he joined the Pilotage division of the Federal Department of Transportation as District Superintendent of Pilots, Halifax. He was later transferred to Ottawa with the Pilotage division and in 1969 was appointed superintendant of Pilotage for Canada. In 1972, he returned to Halifax as founding Chairman of the Atlantic Pilotage Authority. He retired from that position in 1988. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Barbara; sons, Gary, California; Ted (Michelle) and grandsons Angus and Murray, Dartmouth; 2 nieces and 2 nephews, Toronto. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. In keeping with Doug’s request, his ashes will be returned to sea at a later date. Respects to the family will be at their home on Saturday April 2 from 2 to 4pm.
