Obituary of Barbara Helen Penney
Barbara Helen Penney
93, New Germany, Lunenburg Co, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 in Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany. Born in the family home at Baker Settlement on July 2, 1917, she was the third child of Frank Tennyson Carver and his wife, Elva Mae (Wentzell) Carver. After attending Baker Settlement School, she graduated from the Provincial Normal College in 1937, where she played on the A basketball team. At the age of 12, alone, she teamed her father’s oxen to Bridgewater with a load of lumber, returning home eight hours later with two ton of feed, the first of many trips. She worked hard all her life with her father, brothers, husband, and sons. She owned and rode horses for much of her life. Barbara was an accomplished seamstress, needleworker, knitter, quilter, and artist. She taught school for more than thirty years, retiring as principal of Springfield Consolidated School in 1977. She was a life member of the Barss Corner Women’s Institute and an adherent of Epworth United Church. Surviving are her children, Frank (Ruth) Penney, Springfield and their children, Jack, Eric and Beth; Rosemary (John) Rafuse, New Germany, and their children, Joanne, Stephen, Jill, Karen and Janet; Jacob, Jr. (Connie) Penney, New Germany and their children, Natalie, Lezlie, Jacob and Jordan; Dale (Christine) Penney, Pinehurst; Bruce (Shirley Moore) Penney, New Germany and his daughter, Jennifer. There are thirteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Sisters, Myrtle Taylor, Barss Corner; Catherine Alford, Napean, Ont., brother, Hiram (Ruth) Carver, New Germany. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Jacob Penney, two sisters, Mary Judge Height, Grace Corkum; brother, Frank Carver, Jr. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 route 10, New Germany. Funeral 2 p.m., Sunday in Epworth United Church. Rev. Dale Gray officiating. Private burial in Epworth Cemetery, New Germany. Family flowers only.
